Media types are stored on the printer itself, and are selected when loading a roll or sheet into your printer. In order to achieve the best results while printing, using the correct media type along with a profile can make all the difference.

A media type will handle the following:

Feed Speed (to prevent banding and to ensure your print lengths are accurate)

Head Height (to prevent head strike)

Vacuum Strength (to keep the media flat while printing)

How much ink is being applied to the media (to prevent over saturation or dull prints)

What type of ink is being applied to your media (Photo Black ink or Matte Black ink)

A profile will allow you to achieve the best color on your specific media with your specific printer/ink. The profile is a mathematical correction curve that adjusts color based on how it appears on that specific material with that specific ink, ensuring that your prints are as accurate as possible.
